Any app that has been maintained and updated for nearly three decades is a labor of love, but with PCalc, the care, attention to detail, and whimsy that James brings to the app come shining through. PCalc’s About screen can render 3D objects and includes a car racing game and AR mode.įederico and I have had the pleasure of getting to know James well over the years we’ve covered his apps. Tap on the gear icon from the main screen and then ‘Help’ on the Settings page, where you’ll find a link to the app’s delightful About screen. Words and screenshots don’t do PCalc’s About screen justice. As I described it in 2017:Īs soon as I opened the view, I felt like I’d entered Thomson’s private playground where the constraints imposed by developing a calculator app were suddenly removed giving him free reign to experiment. More recently, PCalc’s About screen has taken on a life of its own with a full-blown 3D driving game, 3D bananas, coins, calculators, marbles, and other objects that can be dumped into the scene, and support for AR. The kerfuffle passed with Apple allowing PCalc’s widget and other interactive widgets to remain on the App Store. The App Store featured PCalc’s innovative widget, but App Review wasn’t quite as excited because Apple hadn’t anticipated developers building widgets that do anything other than deliver passive data from apps to users’ Today page. One memorable experiment was PCalc’s fully-interactive iOS 8 widget. James is also known for his experiments with the latest Apple technologies and pushing the boundaries of what people expect in a calculator. Since its beginning, PCalc has competed with Apple’s free system Calculator app on the Mac and iPhone but has succeeded by offering features that Apple doesn’t, like an incredibly deep set of customization options, and bringing calculations to the iPad, something which Apple still hasn’t done more than a decade after the iPad’s release. Today, PCalc is available on the iPhone, Apple Watch, iPad, and Mac (pictured) as well as the Apple TV. Before we get to the interview, though, I’d like to take a moment to introduce you to PCalc, which has a long and rich history that not all readers may know. James also joined us for a special segment of AppStories, covering the Lifetime Achievement award and other MacStories Selects winners. Supported By MacStadiumīelow, you’ll find a written interview that Federico conducted with James about PCalc’s history, what makes the app special, having to adapt to hardware and software transitions by Apple, and what the future may hold. Not only are James and PCalc longstanding pillars of the Apple community, but PCalc represents the sort of innovative and creative spirit that we value most at MacStories. In the end, PCalc by James Thomson, which started on the Mac and has been adapted to every possible Apple platform, was the obvious choice. Last month, I sat down with Federico in Rome to go over the Selects awards, and we began by scanning a list of potential Lifetime Achievement candidates that we’d put together over the previous weeks. In the end, it was the easiest pick of the lot. ![]() Thomson also talks about his favorite apps that he did not create, including Authy, Just Press Record, Sync Solver, and more.John Voorhees: I’d love to tell you that there was drama surrounding the selection of this year’s first-ever MacStories Selects Lifetime Achievement award, but there wasn’t. Plus, hidden driving games with bananas that rain from the sky and panda stickers. The east side gamblers the big machine12/31/2023 Brothels and gambling dens ante’d far more. Pool halls, then illegal, paid $10 a day to stay open. Publicans and impresarios could flout that law by splitting the profits with Big Tim’s machine. City regulations required saloons and theaters to close on Sundays-for many customers, the only day off all week. So did businessmen anxious to avoid problems with city inspectors. Recipients of city jobs “donated” a tithe to Big Tim’s operation. Patrick’s Cathedral, followed by “a procession of nations.” (Library of Congress)īig Tim financed his good works Tammany style, through kickbacks and graft. Spared a pauper’s grave by chance, Big Tim Sullivan departed via Old St. All he asked in return was that on Election Day his people vote the straight Democratic ticket-twice, if possible. And all year long, Big Tim was a notoriously soft touch, handing cash to any petitioner with a tale of woe. On Labor Day, he packed hundreds of families into riverboats for a free cruise to an amusement park. Every February, he gave away shoes by the thousands of pairs. At Christmas, he fed thousands a turkey dinner washed down with beer. Big Tim helped constituents get jobs, distributed coal, and bailed their kids out of legal trouble. His Bowery district was the city’s most crowded, elbow to elbow with Irish, German, Italian, and Jewish immigrants. Tall, brawny, and handsome, with bright blue eyes and a warm smile, Big Tim won election to the state Assembly in 1886 and in 1894 to the state Senate. That makes every one of them good for four votes.” If that ain’t enough, and the box can stand a few more ballots, clean off the moustache and vote ‘em plain face. “Then to the barber again, off comes the sides and you vote ‘em a third time with just a moustache. Then you vote ’em again with side lilacs and moustache,” Sullivan said. “When they vote with their whiskers on, you take ’em to a barber and scrape off the chin fringe. The best repeaters began Election Day full-bearded. Soon, the youth was marshaling Tammany’s voter-fraud operation around The Bowery, using gang members to bully Republicans out of casting ballots and encourage “repeaters” to vote often for Democrats. At 21, young Sullivan bought a saloon that functioned as headquarters for the Whyos, an Irish gang allied with the Tammany machine. At 18, he was running an outfit that distributed five newspapers across Manhattan. At eight, he was hawking newspapers in the street. His father died before the boy started school his stepfather, a drunk, deserted the family, inspiring Tim to swear off booze for life. Timothy Sullivan was born in 1862 to impoverished Irish immigrants in Five Points, a lower Manhattan slum. Known as “King of The Bowery,” Sullivan served as a state senator, a congressman, and, most importantly, as boss of the Tammany Hall Democratic machine on Manhattan’s Lower East Side, where his reign combined politics, organized crime, and an emerging entertainment industry. ![]() Timothy “Big Tim” Sullivan had been one of the most powerful, most beloved, and most corrupt politicians in New York City history. Municipal regulations required a final inspection of each nameless casualty, so a policeman lifted the coffin lid. Nobody claimed the remains, and on September 13, 1913, city workers were readying the unknown dead man for burial on Hart Island, New York’s potter’s field. The corpse lay in a railroad yard in the Bronx, sliced nearly in half by a train. Choosing your class is by no means a world-ending decision considering how flexible Dark Souls 3 is with its leveling, yet choosing the right class can be essential for invading other players or starting on the right foot. Players have to determine their preferred playstyle, choose their starting class, then pick a starting gift. Updated February 10th, 2021 by Charles Burgar: Creating a character in Dark Souls 3 can be difficult. Considering all of these factors, here are all ten of Dark Souls 3's classes ranked from worst to best. While a player's class doesn't matter much in PvE, it can make or break builds in PvP. Instead, they give players different equipment to start with alongside different starting stats. RELATED: Dark Souls 3: All Sacred Chimes, RankedĬlasses in Dark Souls 3 are different from most RPGs in that they don't lock players into a playstyle. For many, this is why choosing a good starting class is important. The trilogy's final installment has some of the toughest foes the franchise has seen, meaning that new players will struggle greatly during the opening hours. A word of warning: Don’t use ash with acid-loving plants, like blueberries.Dark Souls 3 can be a rather intimidating game to get into. Wood ash tends to be alkaline, so it can be used to balance pH levels in acidic soil or compost piles, and it contains a lot of micronutrients, particularly calcium, to round out the soil’s mineral profile. Ash is a great thing in the garden, and it can be used as an additive to composts, mulch, and soil amendment. Ashįor a little slant on the term old firewood, we can also consider what used firewood becomes: ash. These paths work great off patios, in yards, or through forests. Then, we aren’t damaging plants or compacting garden soil. Rather than using concrete (a horrible thing for the environment) or gravel, organic mulch can be used to make attractive pathways through gardens, both preventing weeds and grass from growing, as well as functioning as designated place for our feet. ![]() Then, where there is mulch, there are also potential pathways. Old rotten firewood can be chipped, grinded, or smashed up to make for some very nice, long-wearing mulch for the garden. It prevents weeds, protects soils from drying out, adds fertility to the soil, slows erosion, feeds soil life, and - only because eventually we have to stop listing things, we’ll settle at - more. While we are still on the topic of gardens, we should also mention that organic mulch is magical. Not only will this mean we aren’t using virgin forest to build garden beds, but the decomposing wood, as with the hugelkultur, might actually add a little compost-y goodness to the garden. Rather than going out to buy landscaping timber, one can simply use old logs to border their garden beds. Hopefully, spring has included the introduction of spring gardens, and since raised beds are all the rage, last year’s firewood suddenly becomes a great money-saver and useful commodity. The logs also absorb water and keep the inside of the mound moist in drier times. The slow decomposition of wood, which is why we don’t usually compost chunks, is perfectly suited for making a long-lasting source of nutrients for the plants atop them. Generally, this wood is either atop the ground or in shallow holes, and it is covered with a good layer of soil. The basic idea is to bury old chunks of wood and/or stumps so that they will slowly break down beneath the soil. Hugelkultur is a cool method for building raised garden beds. Top vocal plugins for logic pro x download12/30/2023 Antares Audio Technologies Auto-TuneĪs the original developers and registered trademark owners of the autotune effect, it only seems right to head up our list with Antares Audio Technologies Auto-Tune. The vocoder, which was invented in 1938, synthesizes human speech using different band frequencies whereas a talkbox lets musicians shape the sound of an instrument using their mouth and a plastic tube. To create a seamless and smooth sound, autotune can then remove or add vibrations to keep the duration of the note the required length. Although this highly sought after robotic effect can be created by a vocoder and talkbox it’s important not to get them confused.
